Higher Education R&D Expenditures Increased 11.2%, Exceeded $108 Billion in FY 2023
Research and development (R&D) spending by higher education institutions increased 11.2% ($11 billion) in FY 2023, the largest growth in current dollars since FY 2003, up $11.0 billion from the previous year. R&D expenditures funded by federal sources accounted for $5.6 billion of the increase and 55% of total university R&D in FY 2023. R&D Expenditures at U.S. Universities Increased by $8 Billion in FY 2022
Academic institutions spent $97.8 billion on R&D in FY 2022, an increase of $8.0 billion in current dollars from FY 2021. Federal sources funded almost $54 billion (55%) of the total and accounted for $4.9 billion of the year-over-year increase. Academic R&D expenditures in all science fields combined increased by $5.9 billion (8.4%) in FY 2022. Universities Report Largest Growth in Federally Funded R&D Expenditures since FY 2011
Research and development spending by academic institutions totaled $89.9 billion in FY 2021, an increase of $3.4 billion from FY 2020. R&D expenditures funded from federal sources accounted for $3.0 billion of the total increase—the largest federal increase since FY 2011, when the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 supplemented the flow of R&D support dollars. Science and Technology: Public Perceptions, Awareness, and Information Sources
Public perceptions of science and technology in the United States affect many aspects of civic life. This report provides insights into public confidence in science, understanding of scientific research principles, and Americans� engagement with science through media, scientific activities, or children�s science activities. Confidence in science remains high among Americans: 89% of Americans believe scientists work to make life better for the average person. During the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. adults tended to think more often about the impact of science in their everyday life than they had before the pandemic.

Higher Education R&D Increase of 3.3% in FY 2020 Is the Lowest since FY 2015
R&D spending by academic institutions totaled $86.4 billion in FY 2020, increasing 3.3% ($2.7 billion) from FY 2019. This was the slowest growth since FY 2015, due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the slow growth, federally funded R&D increased 3.7% ($1.7 billion), and funding from the institutions’ own funds rose 4% ($843 million). Data were from the Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey, sponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation.
